There were two groups of French students when we visited, so we got to hear some of the history from the guides. Some of the history sounds quite impossible, but half the fun of these sites is the creative versions of things.

It's kind of hard to get a feel for things -- so many churches and so many headstones are crammed into the space that its easy to lose your bearings. Also, tthrough the whole site and beyond the wall is a small chapel called the Nun's Church, which has a fine romanesque doorway arch.
