Dornoch Castle

We stayed at Dornoch Castle again this time around -- and I think we were in the same room! The restaurant that used to be in the old kitchen is now moved to a more modern conservatory.

the bishop's palace/castle in Dornoch

16th century tower

This is properly referred to as 'Dornoch Palace', I am told, becuase it was built as a bishop's residence for Dornoch Cathedral, across the street.

The main part of the keep is a 13th or 14th century keep with five stories. A round stair tower was grafted onto the building in the 16th century. Most of the windows have been enlarged, as the need for defence was lessened. THe courtyard and garden are still attached t the main tower house.

Attached to the tower is a larger wing added inthe 16th century, with its own stair tower.

Inside, the castle has been repurposed as a hotel, and most of the interior rooms have been moved around and changed. The original kitchen fireplace is still in the vaulted basement (now the reception area of the hotel).
