Fairlie Castle

The little tower house here overlooks the bay, and a steep ravine and Fairlie Burn...popular with walkers and dogs, as we discoered!

the tower house at Fairlie

16th century Tower

THe tower is small, but in very good condition (although you can only view the exterior). It has four stories, and a corbelled out parapet above. It measures 13.8m x 8.7m. The four floors are each subdivided to make smaller rooms, with a stairwall in a side wall.

Unusuially, the kitchen is on the first floor, reached by a small staircase from the vaulted basement

Ownership

THe castle was built by the Fairlies, who owned the lands here in the 14th century. They sold to the Boyles in 1656.
