Ferries

Living in land-locked Colorado, my chances to ride ferries (passenger or vehicle) is pretty small. But if you want to travel to any of the many islands around Scotland, you'll need to book a ferry passage of one sort or another.
Taking a car-ferry can be expensive (in some cases, peopel recommend renting a car on Orkney for the day instead of bringing over your own, for example), but having your own vehicle is nice, even on the smaller islands. And for us, with all our stuff carried with us in the car, it was definitely a good idea.
