Caerlaverock Castle

Ownership

The Maxwell's built the first stone castle here in the 13th century, on the site of earlier fortifications. It has changed hands between the English occupiers and Scots owners many times, often being occupied for decades by English soldiers before being retaken or re-granted to a Scottish lord.

The Maxwells eventually moved from Caelaverock to Terreglas and then to Traquair House.

THe castle is surprisingly spacious - while the rooms inside of the towers are, by necessity, small, the lodging block inside is large and has airy, light-filled rooms. Since it was inside the huge curtain wall, it could hvae large windows. It is fit into the courtyard inside rather haphazardly, though, and there are weird spaces nad corners where there is just empty space, walled off by the new, rectangular hall being dropped into the triangular space.
