I always thought that the corbels (the stone quarter-circle supports) supported the beams for the floor directly. It does make a whole lot more sense to have a beam across the corbels, to spread out the weight, and the beams set across that one. Most of the floors in Smailholm look to be recently refinished or repaired, although none are complete original.
