Dynasty Notes

After the slow decline of the Sixth Dynasty, the First Intermediate period marked political and economic upheaval. There was a breakdown of the centralized government, which resulted in many regional kings, having overlapping reigns. Kings in the north and kings in the south competed for power.

There are a number of dates associated with the 7th and 8th Dynasties.

The Seventh Dynasty has a group of 10 kings that are recorded in the Abydos king list, but they are not shown in the Turin list. Of these, only three are named by their "throne name" (praenomen) -- Neferkare II, Sekhemkare, and Wadjkare. The sequence of the kings is mostly unknown.

The eighth dynasty had six known kings, four of which are known by contemporary sources. Many principalities in the country challenged the role of the pharaoh.

The following kings are listed in one form or another. In this site, most of them will be listed on a single page -- since all we know of them is their name. Where more information exists, I'll put them in a separate page.
