Berenice IV ruled only during the exile of her father, Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysus. For awhile, she co-ruled with her mother, Cleopatra V Tryphaena,b ut her mother died after a year. As a woman on the throne, she was expected to marry.

Seleucus Kybiosaktes was chosen to be her husband, but she obvious did not favor him and had him strangled within a few days of the wedding. She chose the second husband, Archaleus

However, her father finally bought his way back to the throne of Egypt -- and one of his first acts was to have Berenice executed. No one knows if she was executed because she refused to give up power, or if she opposed the return of her father to the throne. He left his younger daughter, Cleopatra VII on the throne when he died.
