  Prev Pharaoh Next Pharaoh

Dynasty Notes

The decline of the Middle Kingdom into the chaos of the Second Intermediate Period ushered in another period of many regional kings and rivals to the throne The centralized govern, ent under one pharaoh once again fell apart.

This was triggered by the invasion of the Hyksos, and the loss of power of the Theban rulers.

The 13th Dynasty itself was only about 116 years in length (to about 1720 BCE) but it had a series of 65 or more kings who ruled individual areas all over Egypt. The political capitol remained in Ijiy-Tawy, but otherwise, the government was pretty mich a free-for-all.

Most of the kings were unrelated -- some may have even been of the lower class or foreigneres living in Egypt. Only Neferhotep I, his son Sithathor, and brother Sebekhotep IV were related.

The chronologies are a mess -- dozens of kings are arranged in different orders bydifferent interpretations of the documentation. Many of the pharaohs are unknown except for a listing in the Turin canon. One of the common chronologies lists the kings as follows:

Amenemhet-senebef
