Dynasty Notes

Like the other dynasties of the Second Intermediate Period, the 14th Dynasty is a series of unrelated king who may have ruled from Lower Egypt in Sais in the Delta. The pharaohs listed here often ruled at the same time as those in the 13th Dynasty and the following 15th Dynaty kings -- the overlap of the timeframes is because the government of Egypt was fragmented and local and provincial kings all claimed power.

The 14th Dynasty lated only about 65 years, but as many as 76 kings ruled from Sais. Only one is actually attested to by contemporary sources -- and he ruled for only one year -- and the rest are form the kinglists only. No reliable dates exist for most of them. Piccione has assigned 1720 -- 1665 as a reasonable range of dates.

The 14th Dynasty is not meant to be viewed as a serial list. Many of the smaller delta provinces had their own rules and they are all just grouped here for conveniences sake; many of them may have ruled concurrently over different parts of the Delta.

An approximate chronology is as follows:

Nehesi
Khatire
Nebfaure
Sehabre
Meridjefare
Sewadjkare
Heribre
sobehotep IX

There are, of course a number of other pharaohs that can be identified by name, but about whom nothing else is known. A slighly more complete list can be found in the Dynasty 14 Chart, which lists the possilbe chronoloigies for this "catch-all" Dynasty. A few of the pharaohs are:

Kanefertenre
Neferibre
ankhkare
Nebjefare Semen[...]re
[...]djefare Senefer
Awibre
Nebsenre
Sekheperenre
Dhedkheure Hibi Khuenwat
Nefertemkare Hapi

and many others...
