exercise CXXXVI

The Verb is in dependent sentences

§ 800. PRESENT TENSE. Is é sin an fear, that is the man. Measaim gur ab (gur ăb) é sin an fear, I think that that is the man.

§ 801. Before consonants ab is usually omitted' as, is mise an fear, I am the man; abeir sé gur (ab) mise an fear, he says that I am the man.

§ 802. NEGATIVE SENTENCE. Ní h-é sin an rí, that is not the king. Saoilim naċ é sin an rí, I think that is not the king. Here, as we see, the verb to be is omitted.

§ 803. PERFECT TENSE. Ba h-í so an áit, níorḃ í so an áit, this was the place, this was not the place. Neasaim gurḃ' (gur'-ăv) í so an áit, I think this was the place. Measaim naċarḃ' í so an áit, I think this was not the place. Naċarḃ (NoCH'-ărv), often shortened to nárḃ (Naurv)

§ 804. Before consonants the of gurḃ, naċarḃ', narḃ' is usually omitted; as, ba ṁór an náire é, it was a great shame. Níor ṁor an áit í, it was not a big place; saoilim nár ṁór an áit í, I think it was ot a big place.

§ 805. CONDITIONAL. Ba ṁaiṫ le Doṁnall dul a ḃaile leat, Donal would like to go home with you. Measaim go mba (mă) ṁaiṫ leis dul leat, I think he would like, saoilim naċ mba ṁaiṫ leis, I think he would not like. But in the S.L. the tendency is to say gur ṁaiṫ, nár ṁaiṫ, as in the perfect.

FUTURE is not used in the S.L.

§ 806. The sentence atá áit ḋeas aige has these to emphatic forms [and this is true of every sentence with (I) verb, (2) nom. case with adjective and indefinite article]:—A. is deas an áit atá aige. B. Is aige atá an áit ḋeas. Note the use in Irish of the definite article.

§ 807. Duḃairt bean liom go nduḃairt (Noo'-ărt) bean léiṫi (a desription of a vague rumor). An é so an sagart as teaċ suas ar ċapall duḃ? Measaim gur ab é, measaim go hfuil capall mar sin (like ṫat) aige. Saoilim gur (ab) fearr leis an duine boċt sin an fíon ioná an bainne, aċt go deiṁin, ní fearr d'á (for his) ṡláinte é. Is dóiġ liom naċ maiṫ le Seamuas an obair ṁór ḃiḋeas air anois. Ní dóiġ liom gur (ab) fearr leo an tart ioná an t-ocras. An dóiġ leat gurḃ ḟearr (that he preferred to) le Niall ḃeiṫ in Albain? Ní dóiġ liom gurḃ ḟearr; do b'ḟearr leis ḃeiṫ in Éirinn. Atá mé ag ceapaḋ go mb'ḟearr (maar, that she would prefer) léiṫi ḃeiṫ sa mbaile arís; agus dá mbéiḋeaḋ, do ḃéiḋeaḋ áṫas uirri. Adeir Seumas gur (ab) leis féin (is his own) an capall agus an láir do ḃí aige ar an aonaċ indé, aċt abeir an fear beag úd naċ le Seumas iad, aċt go ḃfuair Seumas ar an mbóṫar iad, agus é (when he was) ag dul a ḃaile.
